CQ (Coriolis Quintet) Information

CQ, an a cappella male group, was formed in 1986 by four Evanston Township High School classmates in search of an opportunity to sing challenging repertoire "just for the fun of it." The group's wide repertoire extends from 16th Century madrigals and sacred works to 19th and 20th Century classical part songs, sea chanties, glees, spirituals, and jazz arrangements of popular classics. The group comprises the openly male section of the mixed a cappella classical group, Coriolis.

CQ members come from a variety of professional backgrounds: high school choral director, software engineer, financial manager in the not-for-profit sector, aspiring actuary and trying-to-be-retired actuary.  They have also sung separately in various choral groups, ranging from university glee clubs to the Chicago Symphony Chorus.

The dictionary defines "coriolis" as the apparent force that, as a result of the earth’s rotation on its axis, deflects objects freely moving over the earth’s surface to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern hemisphere. While the group considers itself to be an (apparent) musical force in both hemispheres, it has only been directly confirmed that the quartet does, in fact, veer to the right in the north. We are eagerly anticipating an engagement in the southern hemisphere.

CQ has performed widely in Chicagoland and has been in demand as musical entertainment for private organizational and social gatherings. In addition, the group has performed several times before both White Sox and Cubs fans, as well as on local radio. Recent appearances have been at Wrigley Field, Comiskey (Sox) Park, the Cliff Dwellers Club, the Tavern Club, Butler National Country Club, the Evanston Presbyterian Homes, Evanston Township High School (reunion festivities) and Chicago's Orchestra Hall (well, it was in the lobby).
