Background
Coriolis, a 14-voice group of singers, was formed in 1987 by acquaintances in search of an opportunity to sing challenging a cappella compositions. Drawing on its members’ wide-ranging backgrounds, its repertoire extends from 16th century madrigals and sacred music to premieres of 20th and 21st century classical compositions. The singers have a special affinity for the works of late 19th, 20th and 21st century composers, such as Francis Poulenc, Ralph Vaughan-Williams, Benjamin Britten, Aaron Copland, and Ned Rorem. In the spring of 1998, the group gave the first performances of a new work written for them, Reveries On A Summer Day by Chicago composer John Austin, and has since premièred numerous new works by Chicago composer Bob Applebaum.
The group’s members have all sung
extensively in various vocal groups: a
cappella groups Four Shadow
and Blind Man’s Bluff,
college glee clubs and chorales, church choirs, and community and
professional choruses, including the Chicago
Symphony Chorus, the San Francisco
Symphony Chorus, Bella
Voce, the North Shore Choral Society, the Classic
Chorale, the Choral Ensemble of Chicago, the
Tufts Amalgamates, Christmas
Spirit, and Hearing Voices.
In addition to annual holiday and spring concert performances, Coriolis is also available to perform at private gatherings.
